What the Phantom Edition actually adds

Six things on top of the base game:

• The BF Pro Token: a battle pass, special unlocks and tier skips
• Phantom Squad: four soldier skins
• The Chimera vehicle skin
• The Drop Shadow weapon package
• The Shrouded weapon package
• Assorted weapon attachments and profile styling

No extra maps, no extra modes, no weapons other players cannot get. The game you play is the same game.

Is it worth the difference?

Here is the part most listings skip. Five of those six items are appearance only, and appearance does not win firefights. Battlefield rewards learning the maps.

The BF Pro Token is the exception, and it is the reason this edition can make sense. It covers a battle pass and skips tiers, which is money you would otherwise spend separately. So the arithmetic is simple: if you buy battle passes, compare this edition against the Standard Edition plus a pass bought on its own, and take whichever comes out cheaper. If you never buy battle passes, the Standard gives you the same game and you keep the difference.

We used to tell everyone to take the Standard. That was too blunt, because it treated the token as a skin, which it is not.

What you receive

Login details for a PlayStation Network account holding the Phantom Edition, emailed once payment clears. Usually five minutes, two hours at the worst. No region lock, so it works on a PS5 bought anywhere.

Clear 90 GB on the console before you start, because the install stops once the drive fills up.

What PlayStation Plus you need, and when

The single-player campaign starts without a subscription. We have checked this on our own accounts. It is solo only with no co-op, and it needs an internet connection even though you play alone, but PlayStation Plus is not part of it.

Online multiplayer does need PlayStation Plus, sold separately from the game. This is the more expensive edition, and its battle pass token is worth most to players who are online, so budget for the subscription before you choose it.

The connection also has to be steady rather than merely present, because large servers punish packet loss far more than a single-player game does.

How the account works

Change the password and the sign-in email the first time you log in. That is what puts the account under your sole control, and it takes two minutes.

Then enable console sharing and offline play, and the game runs on your own PSN profile with your trophies, saves and friends list intact. Message us on WhatsApp and we walk you through it.

Paying without a credit card

The PlayStation Store wants a card registered in the account’s country. Here the payment goes through the mobile wallet you already use, straight from your phone.
