Windows 11 Home vs. Pro: Which Version Do You Need for Remote Work in 2026?

Posted by

Shops selling Windows tend to push Pro, because Pro costs more. So let us start with the conclusion: for most people, Home is enough, and the extra money is better spent elsewhere.

Pro earns its price in a short list of specific situations. Here is that list, so you can check whether you are in it.

What actually differs

FeatureHomePro
Everyday use: Office, browsing, gamesYesYes
BitLocker drive encryptionNoYes
Connecting out with Remote DesktopYesYes
Being connected to with Remote DesktopNoYes
Hyper-V and Windows SandboxNoYes
Joining a company domain or Microsoft Entra IDNoYes
Group Policy managementNoYes

The Remote Desktop line people get wrong

Both editions can connect out to another machine. Only Pro can be the machine you connect to.

So if you want to reach your office computer from home, the office computer needs Pro. Your laptop at home can be Home. People buy two Pro licences when they needed one, and that is money gone.

When BitLocker is the reason

This is the strongest argument for Pro here, and it has nothing to do with remote work. BitLocker encrypts the whole drive, so a stolen laptop is a lost laptop rather than a lost laptop plus everything on it.

If you carry a machine around Douala or Yaoundé with client files on it, that is worth the difference on its own. If your computer sits at home and holds family photos, it is not.

When Hyper-V and Sandbox are the reason

Developers and anyone who needs to run a second operating system, or open something suspicious in an isolated window without risking the main system. If you know what these are, you already know whether you need them.

Two things we are correcting from an earlier version of this article

This page used to list Windows Information Protection as a Pro advantage. Microsoft has retired that feature, so it is no longer a reason to buy anything.

It also referred to Azure Active Directory. Microsoft renamed it Microsoft Entra ID in 2023. Same thing, current name, and worth knowing if you are searching for documentation.

Check your hardware before you buy either

Windows 11 needs TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a processor on Microsoft’s supported list, whichever edition you choose. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool or look at Windows Update in Settings before ordering. Our article on Windows 10 against Windows 11 covers what to do if your machine does not qualify.

Buying it

Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Home are both on the site. One payment, no subscription, and the key arrives by email within five minutes as a rule.

What we promise is that the key activates, and we sort it out if it does not. What we will not promise is updates forever: that is Microsoft’s decision rather than ours, as Windows 10 owners found out in October 2025.

You pay from your mobile wallet, with no international card needed. If you are unsure which edition fits, send us what you actually do with the machine on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether Home covers it. Quite often it does.

Common questions

Do I need Pro for remote work?

Only if people need to connect to your machine. For connecting out to someone else’s, Home is enough.

Can I upgrade from Home to Pro later?

Yes, Windows offers the upgrade in Settings. You do not have to decide forever today.

Is Pro faster than Home?

No. Same performance. The differences are features, not speed.

What is the single best reason to take Pro?

BitLocker, if you carry the machine around with work on it.

Will my PC run Windows 11 at all?

Check Windows Update in Settings or run PC Health Check first. The hardware requirements apply to both editions.

How do I pay without a bank card?

Pick your country and mobile wallet at checkout, then approve the payment on your phone.
