Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 2026: Check Your Hardware First

Most articles on this question tell you to upgrade and stop there. That advice is useless if your machine cannot run Windows 11, which is the situation for a lot of the computers in circulation here.

So the order matters. Check what your hardware allows, then decide.

The fact that is not in dispute

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Home and Pro on 14 October 2025. No more security patches for consumer editions. A flaw found today in Windows 10 stays open.

That is a real risk and it grows slowly rather than all at once. It matters most on the machine where you check your bank balance and keep your work.

Before you decide: can your PC even run Windows 11?

Windows 11 asks for TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a processor on Microsoft’s supported list. That list excludes a good deal of hardware that still works perfectly well, and secondhand laptops are exactly where it bites.

Two ways to check. In Settings, open Windows Update and see whether it offers Windows 11. Or run Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool, which names the specific requirement your machine fails.

Do that before you buy any licence, from us or anyone else. A Windows 11 key is no use on a machine that will not take Windows 11.

If your machine qualifies

Then upgrade. You get monthly security patches again, current drivers, and software that is tested on your platform rather than tolerated on it.

We sell Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Home, and the difference between them comes down to a handful of features most home users never touch.

If your machine does not qualify

You have three options and we would rather lay them out than pretend there is only one.

Stay on Windows 10. We still sell it, because for a machine that cannot run Windows 11 it is the working option rather than a mistake. Accept that it is unpatched and compensate: keep a real antivirus running, keep your browser updated since that is where most attacks arrive, and if you can, do your banking on your phone instead.

Replace the machine, when the budget allows. Not advice anyone wants, but it is the honest answer for a computer that is both unsupported and struggling.

Or move that old machine to Linux. We do not sell it and we make nothing from saying so, but a laptop too old for Windows 11 often runs a current Linux well, and it keeps receiving security updates.

What we will not tell you

That a key is guaranteed to activate and receive all future updates. Activation we stand behind, and if a key does not activate we sort it out. Future updates are Microsoft’s decision, not ours, and Windows 10 is the proof: the licence stayed valid and the updates stopped anyway.
