Can an Antivirus Protect Windows 10 in 2026? Why Staying Behind is a Risk

This is one of the most common questions we get on WhatsApp, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Partly. An antivirus does real work on an unsupported system, and it does not do the work that security patches used to do. Those are two different jobs and only one of them is still being done.

What an antivirus can and cannot do

It watches files, downloads and web traffic, and it blocks malware it recognises. On a Windows 10 machine in 2026 that is genuinely worth having, and more worth having than it was two years ago.

What it cannot do is repair Windows itself. Microsoft stopped issuing security patches for Windows 10 Home and Pro on 14 October 2025. A flaw in the operating system found after that date stays open, and an antivirus sitting on top of it has no way to close it.

So the honest framing is not “antivirus instead of updates”. It is “antivirus, because there are no more updates, and it covers part of the gap rather than all of it”.

Why you might be on Windows 10 anyway

Plenty of advice tells you to upgrade and stops there, which is useless if your machine cannot take Windows 11.

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a processor on Microsoft’s supported list. That excludes a lot of hardware that still works, and secondhand laptops are where it bites hardest. If that is your situation, staying on Windows 10 is the working choice rather than a mistake, and we still sell it for exactly that reason.

What actually reduces your risk on Windows 10

If you are staying, these are worth more than another paragraph of warnings.

Run a real antivirus and let it update itself. Norton, McAfee and Avast are all on our antivirus page, from one device to ten.

Keep your browser current. Chrome, Edge and Brave still update on Windows 10, and the browser is where most attacks actually arrive. An out-of-date browser on an out-of-date system is the combination to avoid.

Move your banking to your phone if you can. It costs nothing and it takes the most sensitive thing you do off the least protected machine you own.

And be more suspicious of email attachments than you used to be. That is not a product we can sell you, which is precisely why it belongs on this list.

Then do. Monthly security patches resume, drivers stay current, and software is tested on your platform rather than merely tolerated.
