Core is now called Essential
Microsoft renamed this tier in October 2025. Core became Essential, and everyone subscribed to Core was moved across. Same subscription, new name.
So if you are looking for Game Pass Core, this is it. If you are looking for Game Pass Essential, this is also it.
What it gives you
Online console multiplayer, which is the part that matters most. This is the tier that replaced Xbox Live Gold, so without it you cannot play most games online against other people.
It also includes a rotating library of games, smaller than the one on the higher tiers, and member discounts in the store. Microsoft changes the list periodically, so check their page if one specific game is why you are buying.
Essential, Premium or Ultimate
Essential is the cheapest way to get online play. If that is all you need, stop here.
Premium, formerly called Standard, adds a much larger library. Ultimate adds day-one releases, cloud gaming and PC titles, and costs roughly three times Essential.
One honest word on Ultimate: part of what you pay for is cloud gaming, which needs a fast, stable connection to be usable. On most lines in the region it will not be. Weigh that before paying the difference.

This is a region-locked key. A US code redeems on a US Microsoft account only.
