What it does that a spreadsheet cannot

Anyone can draw a schedule in Excel. What Excel will not do is recalculate the whole plan when one task slips. Project handles dependencies, so moving a delivery date pushes everything downstream automatically and shows you the new end date.

The critical path highlights the tasks where a day lost is a day lost on the whole project, which is the difference between knowing you are late and knowing why. Resource levelling flags the week where you assigned the same engineer to three sites at once. Baselines let you compare where you said you would be against where you are, which is usually the part clients and funders ask about.

Microsoft gives Project 2024 five years of security and stability updates, running to October 2029. Project 2021 loses support on 13 October 2026, and the 2019 and 2016 editions stopped receiving patches in October 2025.
