What it protects against
Avast Premium Security is the paid version of the antivirus a great many people already run for free. The free one scans files. The paid one adds the parts that matter once money is involved.
Ransomware protection stops a program encrypting your documents. The fake website filter catches a cloned banking or mobile money page before you type anything into it. Webcam protection blocks an application from switching on the camera without asking. And the firewall controls what gets in and out of the machine.
The fake website filter is the one to care about
Cloned login pages are the most common way people around here lose money online. The page looks right, the logo is right, the address is one character off, and the form posts your credentials straight to someone else.
A blocked page is not glamorous security, but it is the feature most likely to save you a real amount of money this year.
Free or paid
We will be honest rather than pushy. If you use the machine for browsing and documents, and you are careful about what you install, the free Avast covers a lot of ground.
Pay for Premium when the machine handles money, when it is shared with people who install things without asking, or when it runs an operating system nobody patches any more. We set out the whole argument in our article on free versus paid antivirus.
Choosing your options
This licence is sold by device count and by duration. Pick both at checkout. One PC for a year is the usual choice; ten devices for three years works out far cheaper per machine per month if you are covering a household or an office.
If you want the VPN and the cleanup tools alongside the antivirus, Avast Ultimate Suite bundles them for less than buying each separately.
Paying without a credit card
Avast’s own store wants a Visa or Mastercard. Here the payment goes through the mobile wallet you already use, straight from your phone.
We accept MTN MoMo, Orange Money, Airtel Money, Moov Money, Wave, M-Pesa, Telecel Cash, AT Money, Free Money, Vodacom, Tigo and Halotel, depending on where you are. Fourteen countries are covered, and PayPal and card payments work everywhere else. Pick your country at checkout and you only see the wallets that work there, with the price in your local currency.
Common questions
Do I need to uninstall the free Avast first?
No. Entering the licence key upgrades the installation in place.
Does it include a VPN?
No. The VPN comes with Avast Ultimate Suite.
Can I use one licence on a PC and a phone?
Yes, if you buy a multi-device option. A one-device licence covers one machine.
Is it enough on its own for Windows 10?
No. Microsoft no longer patches Windows 10, and an antivirus does not replace those patches.
How fast is delivery?
Five minutes as a rule, two hours at the very outside.
How do I pay without a bank card?
Pick your country and mobile wallet at checkout, then approve the payment on your phone.
